Royal Windsor Endurance offers something no other UK endurance ride does: a course inside Windsor Great Park, run within the prestige setting of the Royal Windsor Horse Show. After a period off the calendar, the ride returns in 2026 on Friday 15 May.

For UK endurance riders, completing here is a meaningful career marker. The FEI sanction puts it in the same competitive frame as international one-day rides elsewhere in Europe; the setting puts it in a completely different conversation.

What''s on offer

The ride runs across multiple classes. The 2026 schedule includes:

  • FEI international classes: 80km and 120km, by qualification
  • National graded endurance rides (GER): 40km and 80km
  • Novice classes: typically 40km
  • Pleasure ride: shorter distance for grassroots access

Course: routes use the bridleways and tracks of Windsor Great Park, including sections of the Long Walk and the deer park rides. The going is generally good, with some hill work but nothing comparable to Exmoor or the Welsh hills.

Run by Endurance GB. Entries through the Endurance GB website, with the closing date 1 May 2026.

How it compares to the Golden Horseshoe

Royal Windsor and the Golden Horseshoe Ride sit in different parts of the UK endurance calendar. Golden Horseshoe is the long-format flagship (up to 100 miles over 2 days, on the famously difficult Exmoor terrain). Royal Windsor is the FEI-sanctioned one-day option, faster going, with the international qualifying structure attached.

If you''re working towards an FEI World Endurance Championship qualification, Royal Windsor is more relevant. If you''re aiming for the bucket-list UK challenge that''s a known name with non-endurance riders, Golden Horseshoe is the answer.

What it''s like as a competitor

The vet gate operates at the show site. Pre-ride atmosphere is unlike any other UK endurance ride: you''re unloading horses next to international showjumpers, with the show in full swing and the public watching. For some riders that''s motivating; for others it adds pressure they don''t need on a long ride day.

The course itself is the main draw. Riding past the Castle, through the Long Walk avenue of trees, and out into the wider park is a meaningful experience. The going is consistent and the route is well-stewarded.

Vet checks at the standard intervals. The 56 bpm threshold applies for Endurance GB classes; FEI thresholds vary by class. Most finishing horses have been in serious endurance work for 12 to 24 months minimum.

What it''s like as a spectator

The endurance classes are not the main draw for the public at Royal Windsor Horse Show. The Friday endurance day shares the showground with the FEI driving and showing classes; most visitors come for the showjumping (which builds to the Rolex Grand Prix on Sunday).

That said, if you''re visiting Royal Windsor Horse Show on a general admission ticket, you can watch the endurance start and the vet gates. It is a useful introduction to the sport for non-endurance riders and a sensible way to assess whether the discipline interests you.

The Royal Windsor Horse Show itself runs 14 to 17 May 2026. Tickets through rwhs.co.uk.

How to enter

For the national graded classes (40km, 80km), Endurance GB qualifying graded rides are required. The exact qualification standard is published in the schedule annually.

For FEI international classes, FEI qualifications are required and the registration process is more involved (FEI horse registration, rider categorisation, insurance documentation). Most FEI Windsor entrants come from established endurance riding stables.

Entry limits apply. Royal Windsor has historically sold out. Confirm entries through endurancegb.co.uk before 1 May 2026.

Saddl''s take

Royal Windsor is the right next-step ride for endurance riders who have completed Endurance GB 80km classes and want a one-day FEI-context entry without leaving the UK. The course is achievable, the setting is unbeatable for British riders, and the qualifying ladder it unlocks is meaningful if you have international ambitions.

For grassroots riders who simply want to experience endurance, the Golden Horseshoe pleasure ride (25km on Exmoor) remains the easier entry point. Royal Windsor is the harder, more prestigious step that follows.
