Hill Farm Stables in Freshwater is the oldest established riding school on the Isle of Wight, run by two generations of the same family from a purpose-built Victorian stable block that was once the West Wight coaching stable for Queen Victoria. The views from the yard are exceptional, the Needles to one side, Lymington Harbour to the other.
The school runs 10 horses and 15 ponies ranging from Welsh section A's through to thoroughbreds, giving the team the range to match horse and rider across all sizes and abilities. Lessons and hacks are tailored to individual ability, beginners are genuinely welcomed alongside experienced riders wanting to kick on through West Wight's open country. Flatwork and jumping lessons take place in a 40m x 20m manege with a rubber surface; cross-country lessons are available over a 30-acre course with obstacles from 20 inches to 3 feet 3.
Hacking routes cover some of the island's best terrain: Golden Hill Parkland, the old railway line along the River Yar, Tennyson Downs and Afton Downs, with plenty of scope for canter work on the open tracks. Beach rides run near Colwell Bay and are available outside summer beach-going hours, they are tide dependent, so contact ahead to check availability.
Children are welcome from age 4 on Tots Trots, 30-minute introductory sessions in the adjoining fields and paddocks. The school is a Pony Club centre. Hats, boots and hi-vis are available to borrow. Groups of 10 or more receive a 10% discount.
