About this yard

Smeltings Farm Riding Centre is a family-run BHS and ABRS approved school established in 1986, set on 35 acres overlooking the Mayfield Valley four miles from Sheffield city centre and quarter of a mile from the Peak District National Park. The school holds a 5-star riding school licence. Private and class lessons run for all individual needs on a string of horses and ponies from 12.2hh to 17.2hh.

What is the minimum age for riding lessons?
The minimum age is 6 years old. There is a maximum weight limit of 13 stone.
How do I book a riding lesson?
You need to register online first through the Rider Registration link. Once registered, you can view and book available private lesson slots, which will also serve as an assessment lesson. After your first lesson, the instructors can advise on availability for class lessons or regular private lessons.
What is the maximum class size?
Group lessons are limited to a maximum of four clients to ensure a high level of instruction and individual attention.
What cancellation notice is required?
You must give at least 36 hours' notice to cancel a regular lesson slot without being charged. Bookings should be made at least three days in advance.
What facilities are included with livery?
Full livery includes stabling, automatic waterers, high-quality Dengie feeds and haylage, tack and rug storage, rug washing facilities, vaccination schedule management, regular farrier and dental visits, 24-hour on-site supervision, and CCTV security. Livery clients also have free access to the indoor and outdoor arenas, jump paddock, round pen, hacking tracks, hot water shower, and solarium.
Are there riding lessons during school holidays?
Yes, additional lessons and courses are run for children during school holidays. Email the centre for further details.

Clothing

Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs must be covered, no vest tops or shorts. Jackets and coats should be fastened securely. Waterproofs are recommended for outdoor lessons.

Hair & jewellery

Long hair should be tied back in a ponytail before putting on your helmet. All jewellery must be removed before riding.

Clients arriving in unsuitable clothing or footwear may not be permitted to ride, for their own safety. If in doubt, contact the yard before your visit.
