About this yard

A BHS Highly Commended and ABRS+ approved riding school at Fir Tree Stud, Spaldington, a few miles outside Howden and within easy reach of Goole, Selby, York, Hull and the M62 corridor. Founded by Janice Chadwick and run with a team of BHSI and Stage 4 Senior Coaches including BD-listed trainers, the centre specialises in personalised, welfare-conscious tuition from age three upwards with no upper age limit.

Lessons run in private and small-group formats across all levels, from complete beginners on the lead rein to competitive riders working with dressage and jumping schoolmasters. The centre is 5-star rated by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, holds BHS Highly Commended status, and is a registered BHS Stage 1, 2 and 3 examination centre. All instructors are DBS-checked, fully insured and safeguarding-qualified.

When are you open?
Open for lessons every day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Office open Mondays 9am–6pm, Thursdays 9am–7pm, Fridays 9am–7pm, Saturdays 9am–5pm.
What age do you take children from?
Children from age 4 for standard lessons, and from age 3 for Little Tots sessions.
Are all your instructors qualified?
Yes, all instructors and staff are BHS qualified and experienced, with First Aid qualifications, Safeguarding and DBS checks.
What is your cancellation policy?
48-hour cancellation policy. Cancellations with more than 48 hours notice are not charged; less than 48 hours are payable.
Do you have a weight limit?
Yes, each horse has its own carefully calculated weight limit. Riders on standard horses limited to 13 stone; mechanical horse to 15 stone.
Do you offer lessons for riders with additional needs?
Yes, staff are qualified coaches with experience teaching riders with various additional needs. Alternative education provision also available through BHS Changing Lives programme.

Hair & jewellery

Long hair should be tied back in a ponytail before putting on your helmet. All jewellery must be removed before riding.
